Apple explains how to turn off MacBook Pro logo that drains battery

The glowing Apple logo on the new MacBook Pro uses battery power whenever the laptop is awake. Apple has now explained how to disable the feature for users who would rather save power or keep the light switched off.
Unlike older MacBooks, which illuminated the logo using the screen’s backlight, the latest OLED models require a separate light source. However, Apple has not disclosed how much power the new system consumes or whether switching it off makes a noticeable difference to battery life.
The company published instructions on 5 November showing how to disable the illumination through Terminal, as the option is not available in the usual System Settings menu.
How to turn off the glowing Apple logo
Apple’s instructions explain that users cannot disable the light through the usual System Settings menu. Instead, they must open the Terminal application and enter a command.
To switch off the logo, users need to enter:
sudo defaults write com.apple.CoreBrightness LEBacklightMode -int 0
The system will request an administrator password. Once the command runs successfully, the logo will stop glowing.
Users who want to turn the light back on can enter:
sudo defaults delete com.apple.CoreBrightness LEBacklightMode
Apple also notes that reinstalling macOS will restore the illuminated logo automatically.
The setting applies to every user account on the Mac, not just the person who enters the command.
Apple’s instructions apply specifically to the new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, which goes on sale on 6 November. The redesigned laptops come in 14-inch and 16-inch versions with OLED touchscreens and M5 Pro or M5 Max chips.
